What is a Car Starter?
Your car starter consists of two main components. The first part, the primary motor, turns your crankshaft and starts your engine. The second component, the solenoid, works together with the primary motor to engage the starter’s drive gear. It also closes the main motor’s electrical contacts. Your car starter is built to be rugged and sturdy.
Is Starter Repair In Your Future?
Just like when you get sick, there are symptoms that your car will exhibit when the starter is not working correctly. The following is a list of what to look for:
- Try starting your car and pay attention to the lights on your dash panel. If there is an internal short, it may draw more amperage from the electrical system which can be indicated by your lights.
- Listen for a chugging sound while cranking. If the chugging is accompanied by the dimming and brightening of your lights, there may be a mechanical failure in the motor’s bearings.
- Listen for your solenoid to click. If you hear a series of rapid clicks, you may have a lack of power from the battery or a problem with your solenoid.
- Listen for grinding. This indicates that the starter’s drive gear isn’t disengaging from the flywheel’s gear teeth or isn’t engaging with the flywheel at all. While a whirring sound can indicate a bad return spring or solenoid.
